One of the causes of SCA is ventricular fibrillation (VF), a condition where the heart beats in an abnormal rhythm and is unable to pump blood throughout the body.
Electric shock, or defibrillation, is currently the only known treatment capable of restoring a troubled heart from VF back to its normal rhythm.
The survival rate decreases by 7–10% for every minute that passes without treatment, and if left untreated, the victim may die within minutes.

An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable device that analyzes heart rhythm and delivers a shock when necessary to help restore a normal heartbeat during Sudden Cardiac Arrest.
Place the AED beside the patient and press the green On/Off button.
The device will immediately begin providing clear voice instructions and visual prompts to guide the rescuer through the rescue process.
The Philips HeartStart FRx is designed to be simple to use, even for first-time responders.
Carefully follow the step-by-step guidance provided throughout the emergency.
Open the SMART Pads II cartridge and remove the pads.
Apply the pads to the patient's bare chest according to the diagrams displayed on each electrode.
Place one pad on the upper right side of the chest below the collarbone and the second pad on the lower left side of the chest below the armpit.
Press firmly to ensure complete contact with the skin.
The AED will automatically detect when the pads are properly attached.
For infants and children under 8 years of age or weighing less than 25 kg, insert the optional Infant/Child Key into the AED.
Once inserted, the Philips HeartStart FRx automatically adjusts the energy level and CPR guidance for pediatric patients.
Unlike many AEDs, the same SMART Pads II can be used for both adults and children when the Infant/Child Key is utilized.
Once the pads are attached, the Philips HeartStart FRx automatically begins analyzing the patient's heart rhythm using SMART Analysis technology.
During this process, ensure that nobody is touching the patient.
The device will determine whether a shockable rhythm is present and provide clear instructions based on the analysis results.
If the AED detects a shockable rhythm, it will announce that a shock is advised and begin charging automatically.
Ensure that everyone is clear of the patient and loudly state "Stand Clear."
When instructed by the device, press the flashing orange Shock button to deliver the defibrillation shock.
The FRx features Quick Shock technology, which helps minimize the time between CPR and shock delivery.
After the shock is delivered, or if no shock is advised, immediately resume CPR.
The Philips HeartStart FRx provides CPR coaching and an audible metronome to help maintain the recommended compression rate.
Continue performing chest compressions according to the AED's instructions and minimize interruptions whenever possible.
After a period of CPR, the AED will instruct rescuers to stop compressions while it re-analyzes the patient's heart rhythm.
If another shock is required, follow the prompts provided by the AED to safely deliver therapy.
If no shock is advised, resume CPR immediately and Continue following all voice instructions provided by the device.
Repeat the cycle of rhythm analysis, shock delivery when indicated, and CPR until emergency medical personnel arrive and take over patient care.
If the patient regains normal breathing or responsiveness, continue monitoring their condition closely until medical professionals arrive.
